How does IPL Hair Removal work?
SHR stands for Super Hair Removal. Traditional IPL delivers one stronger pulse at a time, while SHR uses a series of lower-energy pulses as the handpiece moves continuously across the skin. This gradually builds heat within the treatment area.
The light energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair and travels down to the follicle. Repeated heating affects the cells involved in hair growth, helping reduce the follicle’s ability to produce new hair.
Hair grows in different stages, and IPL works best while the hair is actively growing. This is why treatments are spaced over time. Results vary depending on the treatment area, hair colour and thickness, skin tone and hormonal factors.

Is IPL Hair Removal permanent?
IPL provides long-term hair reduction, but it cannot guarantee that every hair will be permanently removed. Some hair may grow back over time, particularly in areas affected by hormones. Maintenance treatments may be needed.
How many IPL Hair Removal treatments will I need?
Most people need several treatments because the hairs in one area are not all growing at the same time. A three-treatment package may form part of a longer course. The total number will depend on the area, hair growth and how well the hair responds.
Which hair colours and skin tones can be treated with IPL?
Darker hair usually responds best because it contains more pigment for the light to target. Very light blonde, red, grey or white hair may not respond well. Very dark or tanned skin may not be suitable with the current IPL device, so your skin and hair need to be assessed first.
Does IPL Hair Removal work for hormonal or PCOS-related hair growth?
IPL can reduce the hair that is present, but it cannot change the hormonal cause of the growth. New hair may continue to develop, so more treatments or ongoing maintenance may be needed.
Does IPL Hair Removal hurt?
Most people feel warmth as the handpiece moves across the skin. SHR uses repeated lower-energy pulses, which can feel more comfortable than the sharper flick associated with traditional IPL. The treatment should not feel like burning.
How should I get ready for IPL Hair Removal?
Avoid direct sun exposure for four weeks and fake tan for one to two weeks before treatment. Use SPF 30 or higher and shave the area as instructed. Don’t wax, pluck or use an epilator, as the hair needs to remain connected to the follicle for IPL to work.

Who should not have IPL Hair Removal?
IPL Hair Removal isn’t provided during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or over tanned, sunburnt or fake-tanned skin. It may also be unsuitable if you have an active skin infection, a cold sore, severe eczema or dermatitis in the area, tattoos or permanent makeup within the treatment area, or epilepsy triggered by flashing light. Some medications, including isotretinoin and medicines that make the skin sensitive to light, may also prevent treatment.
